Scotsman Fringe First for Allotment!

Nutshell Theatre’s Allotment has won a Scotsman Fringe First Award! We’re absolutely thrilled to receive such a prestigious drama award, particularly alongside brilliant productions including the Traverse’s Ten Plagues with Marc Almond, Simon Callow’s solo show Tuesday at Tesco’s, innovative companies Rashdash, Curious Directive and Icon Theatre, and new plays An Instinct for Kindness and The Oh Fuck Moment.

In time-honoured Fringe-poster fashion, here are some gathered stars, and a pic of some of team Nutshell by the posters in George Square (l to r: Kate Nelson – director, me Jules Horne – writer, Sarah Paulley – designer). Sadly the actors Nicola Jo Cully and Pauline Goldsmith couldn’t make it to the awards as they were mid-show – thankfully in good weather*.

The fabulous creative team behind Allotment are: Kate Nelson (director), Nicola Jo Cully (actor), Pauline Goldsmith (actor), Sarah Paulley (designer), Ed Littlewood (producer),  Michael Dickson (stage manager), Alice Kornitzer (assistant director), Rachel McEwan (venue manager), Eileen MacCallum (Marketing & Press). Huge thanks to all for bringing my script to life!

More about the show and set is here, and some beautiful pix by Eamonn McGoldrick are here. And visit Nutshell Theatre here!

We’re also delighted that Allotment won the 2011 Fringe Award for Sustainable Production from the Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts. The CSPA said: ‘Allotment stood out in its minimal environmental impact, very much a result of its setting in the Inverleith Allotments, requiring very little scenic construction and no additional show technology. Additionally the venue was easily accessible by public transportation, refreshments created little waste, themes of one’s relationship to the natural world were evident and it received excellent audience response.’

*Meanwhile Ed has sent these pics of Pauline, Nicola and Alice – am in absolute awe.

PS The audience had umbrellas.
